The Linteum shall be of rectangular shape, folded neatly, and reserved for the service of charity, justice, and proclamation of the word. It is to be worn during the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy, and may be carried at other times when engaged in diaconal ministry.
The Rite is usually celebrated on the day of a deacon's ordination/incardination, prior to the Mass of Ordination/Incardination. The Linteum is then presented during the Ordination/Incardination Rite. Should a deacon later have need a new Linteum, the rite may be celebrated by the Ordinary, and the new Linteum delivered, either in person or by mail, to the deacon.
When the Ordinary-elect is already a bishop, he shall celebrate the Rite and distribute the Linteum to the deacons present for the Installation Mass, and shall deliver, either in person or by mail, Linteums to those unable to attend. When the Ordinary-elect is not a bishop, he shall celebrate the Rite at his first Mass after Consecration and Installation and shall distribute or deliver the Linteums as appropriate.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
O God, come to our assistance.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Let us pray.
Eternal Father, through your Son, Jesus Christ, who girded himself with a towel to serve his disciples in humility: bless this Linteum as a sign of humble service. May the one who receives it act in charity and justice, proclaim the word boldly, and minister to the needs of your people with joy; and may those touched by their ministry encounter your presence, and the peace that Christ alone can give. Amen.
The Ordinary sprinkles the Linteum with Holy Water.
Deacon ______, receive this Linteum, the sign of Christ's service, in token of our apostolic relationship and of your place within the diaconal order. Take care to cherish this sign of service, and ensure that your ministry is marked by mercy, justice, and love for all. Ensure that it is returned to me or my successor in the event of your transfer or resignation, or buried with you in the event of your death.
